But admiration soon turns to envy. Why has God bestowed such extraordinary genius on a vulgar, infuriating young man instead of him? Consumed by jealousy, Salieri sets out to destroy the man whose music he cannot help but worship.

Peter Shaffer's celebrated play inspired Miloš Forman's legendary 1984 film starring Tom Hulce as Mozart and F. Murray Abraham as Salieri – a cinematic phenomenon that won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Now the battle between Mozart and Salieri returns to the stage in a major new West End production directed by Olivier Award-winner Jeremy Herrin.

And for Michael Sheen, Amadeus marks an extraordinary return. In 1998, he played Mozart opposite David Suchet's Salieri at the Old Vic. Nearly three decades later, he steps back into Shaffer's masterpiece – this time on the other side of the rivalry as Salieri.
